Halloween is one of the most exciting and haunting holidays of the year for children! It’s a time for them to express their imagination through their costume ideas, all while experiencing their favorite festive activity, trick-or-treating! Although trick or treating is a beloved tradition that children look forward to each year, there are still various safety tips that all parents should keep in mind to ensure this year’s Halloween is both fun and safe! We have listed several safety tips about treats and trick or treating that all parents should be aware of below!
Ensure Halloween Treats are Safe
Collecting and eating enormous amounts of candy is the number one goal for every child on Halloween. Although this sounds like the best time ever for our little ones, there are still some things that you should know as a parent. Follow our tips below:
- Children should not eat their candy until it has been thoroughly expected at home.
- If you believe your child will begin eating candy as they begin their trick-or-treating journey, make sure they have a snack before heading out!
- If your child has a food allergy, make sure their candy does not contain their allergen. Also, make sure that your child does not accept any candy that isn’t commercially wrapped.
- If your child is very young or a trick-or-treating first timer, make sure that choking hazards like hard candy, gum, and small toys are removed.
- Lastly, make sure that every candy received is clear for consumption. Keep a close eye on its appearance, like discoloration, holes in wrappers, or tears. If anything looks suspicious, throw it away without any hesitation.
Trick or Treating Safety Tips
There’s nothing that children love more than dressing up in their costumes and trick or treating on Halloween, and there’s nothing that parents love more than ensuring their children are safe while also having a blast! Even though trick or treating is a fun and memorable tradition, there are still some safety precautions that every parent should be aware of this year. Check them out here:
- If you have a young child, make sure you accompany them around your neighborhood. The trick-or-treating festivities usually occur after dark, so make sure you are by their side to ensure they are safe and protected.
- If your children are older and trick-or-treating alone, plan their route and agree on a time for them to return home. Also, make sure they have flashlights with full batteries.
- Remind your children about the dangers of distracted walking, such as texting, listening to music, and other similar distractions.
- Lastly, remind your children to stay on the sidewalk as much as possible during their trick-or-treating voyage, especially at night. Also, only trick or treat at houses with lights on!
