Tips and Tricks for Carving Pumpkins This Halloween

Pumpkin carving is one of the oldest and most beloved Halloween traditions! Carving jack o’lanterns is a fun and creative way to get into the Halloween spirit for all ages! There’s nothing quite like digging into a pumpkin and getting your hands dirty. Since this Halloween tradition can become quite messy, we have provided several tips and tricks below for making pumpkin carving easy and fun!

Picking the Right Pumpkin from the Patch

When searching for the perfect pumpkin for carving, keep a close eye on ones with flat bottoms. By doing so, it will prevent it from wobbling while on display. You should also tap on the pumpkin to ensure it sounds hollow. If you hear a thud sound, then the pumpkin is most likely overripe.

Use a Cheap Tablecloth

Before the carving process gets messy, place down an old or cheap tablecloth as the foundation for your Halloween creation. Tablecloths will keep the pumpkin guts and seeds all in one place, preventing a mess that no one wants to clean up! Trust us, you will thank yourself later!

Design with a Dry-Erase Marker

Dry-erase markers take the designing process to a whole new level. Before carving your pumpkin, use a dry-erase marker to sketch a design and see what looks best. By doing so, you can effectively and accurately create the design leading to a successful outcome. The best part is, you can always erase easily and start over.

Pumpkin Preparation

Begin the pumpkin preparation process by cutting the top at a slight angle that is wider on the outside and slimmer on the inside. This trick will prevent the pumpkin’s lid from falling inside. Also, make sure you cut down the back of the pumpkin, which will provide easier access for pumpkin gut removal!

Effectively Remove Pumpkin Guts

Removing pumpkin guts is fun, but it’s also messy! To effectively remove the pumpkin guts, try using an ice cream scooper or a durable metal spoon, which is great for scraping. For a Halloween snack, make sure you keep the pumpkin seeds and roast them!

Insert Glow Sticks or Lights

Safety always comes first, especially when children are involved! Instead of using regular candles within your jack o’lantern, try a safer alternative like glowsticks or battery-operated candles, which can prevent fire hazards from occurring.
